Detective Anna (original title Анна - Детективъ) was a 2016 - 2017 Russian period detective/fantasy series about a young woman (Aleksandra Nikiforova) who discovers that she can see and communicate with the dead. She uses her powers to help a detective (Dmitriy Frid) solve crimes in their 19th century Russian village.

A second season, titled Detective Anna II (Анна-детективъ II), aired from 2020 - 2021. In this season, set in 1894, Anna is once again visited by the spirits of the dead after a long period of quiet. She and Yakov team up again to battle a new crime wave in their provincial village.

Adepts, Part 1 (Season 1, Episode 51)[edit | edit source]

Anna and Yakov encounter a group of Satanists who want to use Anna and her powers for their own evil purposes. Their leader, a Rasputin-like mystic, hypnotizes Anna to keep her under his control.

Adepts, Part 2 (Season 1, Episode 52)[edit | edit source]

Anna and Yakov attempt to arrest the Satanic cult, but Anna cannot remember their faces. The leader surprises Anna and quickly places her back under hypnosis.

The Prince, Part 2 (Season 1, Episode 54)[edit | edit source]

Anna's investigation into the death of a prince is unexpectedly complicated by the retun of the cult leader, who once again manages to hypnotize her.

Ice (Season 2, Episode 2)[edit | edit source]

Two people are shot to death in a forest. Anna discovers their bodies, but a mysterious person hypnotizes her and erases her memory of the event.

The Mésalliance (Season 2, Episode 13)[edit | edit source]

Anna visits her bookstore owner friend Polina (Yuliya Takshina), and the subject of hypnosis comes up. Polina offers to hypnotize Anna to "show her how it works." Unfortunately, their session is quickly interrupted by the arrival of a customer.

The Inventor of Death (Season 2, Episode 36)[edit | edit source]

The spirit of a Moscow singer asks Anna to "save him," but the 'him' turns out to be Andrey (Maksim Radugin), her former lover who is now a vengeful murderer. Andrey uses hypnosis to create witnesses who will support his alibis. When Anna gets too close for comfort, he kills the policeman guarding her and kidnaps her. But there is more to the story than the ghost lets on.

Robespierre's Talisman (Season 2, Episode 38)[edit | edit source]

Polina's true past and intentions are uncovered, including her role in Andrey's "Whirlpool" murders, and the revelation that she used hypnosis to control those around her. Anna is hypnotized into stealing "Robespierre's Talisman", a magical silver snuffbox that can instantly entrance anyone who looks into it.

Abracadabra (Season 2, Episode 40)[edit | edit source]

A surprising antagonist uses Robespierre's Talisman to hypnotize everyone at Anna's wedding, before using it on Anna as well.
