Hawaii Five-O

From Mental Block

Hawaii Five-O was a 1968-1980 American television series about a fictional Hawaiian state detective department known as "Five-O" and led by Detective Captain Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord). The crimes investigated by the unit ranged from simple cases of robbery and murder to complex international espionage plots, often orchestrated by the nefarious Wo Fat (Khigh Dheigh).

Cocoon (Season 1, Episode 1)[edit | edit source]

In the two-hour pilot for the series, Wo Fat uses a sensory deprivation tank to torture American agents, "draining" them of useful information before murdering them. When the body of one such agent washes ashore, the Five-O team is called in to investigate. McGarrett discovers the sensory deprivation tank and, sensing that this case is "too hot for Five-O to handle alone," calls in the federal government to help. A CIA doctor hypnotizes McGarrett and programs him with all sorts of false information, including the revelation that he is the "Agent Control" that Wo Fat is really after. McGarrett then allows himself to be captured and placed in the tank. After spending hours in the tank, McGarrett is hauled out and asked by Wo Fat about "Control"- the trigger phrase that causes the detective to spill all of the fake intel he's been programmed to recall. Wo Fat hurries back to China with what he thinks is extremely valuable intel, while Five-O and federal agents storm the rusty freighter where McGarrett is being held and free him.

A Bullet for McGarrett (Season 2, Episode 6)[edit | edit source]

Dr. Paul Farrar (Eric Braeden) is one of Wo Fat's lackeys and a professor of psychology at a local college. He uses his knowledge of hypnosis to turn people into assassins. After a student (Sheila Larkin) guns down her target and then kills herself, the Five-O team investigates. McGarrett sends policewoman Joyce Bennett (Marianne McAndrew) undercover as a student in Farrar's class. But Farrar figures out what's going on and hypnotizes Joyce into shooting McGarrett.

The Sleeper (Season 11, Episode 1)[edit | edit source]

The federal government investigates a Honolulu think tank called the Marsh Foundation in an attempt to ferret out a spy who is stealing information and murdering anyone who gets in the way. McGarrett and Five-O are called in to help. The spy turns out to be the head of the Marsh Foundation, Dr. Karl Rathman (Andrew Duggan), who has been using an experiential procedure to brainwash Sonya Hansen (Maria Perschy), another Marsh researcher, into carrying out the killings for him.

The Deadly Courier (Season 11, Episode 3)[edit | edit source]

Marla Kahuana (Irene Yah Ling Sun) hypnotizes a courier into rigging the briefcase he's carrying with a bomb. Later, she hypnotizes Danno and programs him to kill McGarrett.
