Injustice 2

From Mental Block

Injustice 2 is a 2017 fighting video game based upon the DC Universe. It was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is the sequel to 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game was initially released in May 2017 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; a Microsoft Windows version was released later in November 2017. An expanded version of the game, titled Injustice 2: Legendary Edition, was released in March 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Similar to the previous installment, a companion mobile app was released for Android and iOS devices. A prequel comic book series of the same name, written by Tom Taylor, was also released beginning in April 2017. Injustice 2's storyline centers around Batman and his Insurgency's attempt to restore society after the fall of Superman's Regime; however, the arrivals of the newly formed supervillain group "The Society" and the alien Brainiac forces Batman to consider freeing the imprisoned Superman to help combat the threats. The game received positive reviews from critics, who praised its story, presentation, improved gameplay mechanics, abundance of in-game content, and character customization options, while criticizing its random loot and microtransaction systems.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The game begins with Kara Zor-El's and an infant Kal-El's escape from Krypton during Brainiac's attack on the planet. Aided by Kara's mother, they manage to escape aboard pods headed to Earth, but debris from Krypton's destruction knocks Kara's ship off course. Years later, prior to the events of the first game and following the formation of Superman's Regime, Batman and Robin attempt to stop the Regime from rounding up Arkham Asylum inmates for execution. After defeating Cyborg and Wonder Woman, Batman fights Superman, but fails to dissuade him from continuing his extreme measures. Finding Superman's methods more in line with what the League of Assassins taught him, Robin then joins the Regime, executing Victor Zsasz as a show of trust.

In the present, five years after the fall of the Regime, Batman and the Insurgency are attempting to rebuild society. When a new faction, the Society, composed of villains spearheaded by Gorilla Grodd, emerges and seeks global domination, Batman is forced to send his allies - Black Canary, Green Arrow from a parallel universe, and Harley Quinn - to combat them in Slaughter Swamp. Though they defeat Poison Ivy and Scarecrow, and form an alliance with Swamp Thing, the villains escape. Upon tracking them down to Gorilla City, the trio fight them again and defeat Catwoman and Bane, before Doctor Fate warns Green Arrow and Black Canary of an incoming threat towards the planet. After defeating Grodd, the two are abducted by Brainiac, the true mastermind behind the Society, who reveals his intentions to capture Superman and add Earth to his collection of shrunken planets. After Brainiac takes over Batman's communications hub, Brother Eye, Batman searches for allies to combat him.

While Catwoman, actually a double agent for Batman, frees Harley in Gorilla City, a pardoned Flash battles Captain Cold, Deadshot, and Reverse-Flash in New Metropolis, before he and a reformed Green Lantern join Batman. The latter is sent to Atlantis to gain Aquaman's assistance, defeating Cheetah, Bane, and Atrocitus, who tries to persuade him into joining the Red Lantern Corps, in the process. Though reluctant at first, Aquaman agrees to help when Brainiac attacks Atlantis. Meanwhile, Black Adam, Wonder Woman, and Kara (having been rescued by Adam years prior and taken the name Supergirl) attack the prison holding Superman, Nightwing and Cyborg, in order to free them and restore the Regime, defeating Blue Beetle and Firestorm when they try to stop them. After Batman arrives, he releases Superman and forms an uneasy alliance with the remnants of the Regime, desprate to stop Brainiac.

Cyborg, Catwoman, and Harley return to the Batcave to free Brother Eye from Brainiac's control and coordinate civilian evacuation efforts, defeating Poison Ivy, Bane, Deadshot, and Grid - a pure machine copy of Cyborg created by Brainiac to delay them. Wonder Woman takes Supergirl to New Metropolis, defeating Captain Cold, Reverse-Flash, Scarecrow, and Cheetah; when she almost kills the latter, Supergirl stops her and heads to the Fortress of Solitude to confront Superman on the matter, learning the truth of her cousin's tyranny. As Brainiac prepares to destroy Earth, having collected enough cities, the Insurgency and the Regime attempt to take on his ship, but fail to destroy its shields, with Superman being seemingly killed in the process. They then concoct a plan to weaken Brainiac's shields by using Aquaman's trident as a conduit for the magic of the Rock of Eternity, with Aquaman and Black Adam being sent to retrieve it. They are followed by Grodd and a brainwashed Black Canary, Green Arrow, and Blue Beetle, but defeat them, before Aquaman executes Grodd and weakens Brainiac's shields enough for Batman and Supergirl to break in. They are captured, but Superman frees Batman, and together they defeat a brainwashed Firestorm and Swamp Thing, as well as Doctor Fate, who was forced to help Brainiac by the Lords of Order, only to be killed by Brainiac once he's freed from their control. After defeating Brainiac, Superman takes control of the ship and restores most of Earth's cities, but permanently loses New Metropolis and Coast City.

The heroes are divided over Brainiac's fate: Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Supergirl want to spare him in order to restore New Metropolis, Coast City and the other cities, while Superman, Aquaman, Black Adam, and Wonder Woman want to kill him before he could cause more harm and use his ship to restore the Regime's rule over Earth. When Batman attacks Superman with a gold kryptonite-laden dagger, a battle ensues, and the player must choose one side. After defeating each other's teammates, Batman and Superman engage in a final battle in the Batcave, and the winner is determined by the player's choice.
